Athletistic / Figure skating. In Las Vegas (USA), during the congress of the International Skating Union (ISU), it was decided to change the rules regarding the execution of somersaults during official competitions. From the 2024/2025 season, this element is authorized in figure skating.
This proposal was submitted to the congress by the ISU technical committee. As a result, it was adopted by a majority of votes as part of a package of amendments to the regulation.
“The somersault is a spectacular element at the moment, it would be illogical to include it among the prohibited,” says the reasoning part of the ISU amendment.
Note that double European champion Adam Xiao Him Fa, who competes for France, regularly performed somersaults in the free program during the 2023/2024 season. He did so even though he received two penalty points for each attempt.
Somersaults in figure skating were prohibited due to the risk of injury. The restriction on the performance of this element was introduced after the 1975 World Championships.
