Senior coach of the Russian cross-country ski team Yuri Borodavko told that in the current political situation everything was moving towards an extension of the suspension of Russian skiers from international competitions, but none of the athletes thought about changing their citizenship.
Earlier, the press service of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) told that Russian and Belarusian athletes are still suspended from participating in competitions under the auspices of the organization.
— Everything led to the extension taking place. It has now been the second year that we have been living our lives preparing for competitions. I would like to be able to participate in the Olympic Games, but all this is illusory. Judging by the developments in the political situation in the world, I think we will not have access to it.
The hypothesis that the election of a new IOC president could contribute to our return is quite simply our wish. Sport has long since become politics and no one is interested in private opinion.
— Are you allowing a massive change in sporting citizenship during the pre-Olympic season?
– This is a very serious step. At least I haven’t heard any of our skiers talking about changing their citizenship. I don’t see any preconditions for a change. There is a whole transition system, it’s not that simple. The Federation cannot authorize transfer to another country. Everything will depend on how the FIS transition committee, as well as the Olympic committee, perceive this,” Borodavko told .
The Winter Olympic Games will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 6 to 22, 2026.
