Russian mixed martial artist Umar Nurmagomedov and Chinese fighter Song Yadong have successfully made weight for their headlining bantamweight bout at UFC Fight Night 286 in Shanghai, according to Russian news outlet Sport-Express.
Nurmagomedov weighed in at 61.4 kilograms, while Song registered 61.6 kilograms on the scales. Both athletes met the required limit for the bantamweight division, clearing the final obstacle for their five-round clash scheduled for August 29 at the Oriental Sports Center.
Nurmagomedov enters the fight ranked second in the UFC official bantamweight standings, holding an impressive professional record of 20 wins and one loss. Song, ranked sixth in the division, enters the octagon with 23 victories, nine losses, and one draw. Sport-Express reported that a victory in Shanghai could grant Nurmagomedov a fresh opportunity to earn a UFC title shot.
Title pursuit and division background
The Ultimate Fighting Championship, based in Las Vegas, Nevada, is the premier global organization in mixed martial arts. Its bantamweight division features competitors fighting at the 135-pound limit. Nurmagomedov, a native of Dagestan, Russia, and cousin of legendary undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, has established himself among the division's top elite. Song, a native of China who trains out of Team Alpha Male in California, represents one of Asia's most prominent figures in professional MMA.
Nurmagomedov's only career defeat occurred in January 2025 during a bantamweight title match against Georgian fighter Merab Dvalishvili. The Russian contender suffered a broken finger in the second round of that bout before losing on points. Since that setback against Dvalishvili, who holds the UFC bantamweight championship belt, Nurmagomedov has rebounded by winning two consecutive fights.
