Sporting manager Rui Borges has dismissed reports of a training ground incident involving striker Luis Suárez ahead of Saturday night's league debut against Estrela da Amadora at Reboleira. Borges denied rumors of a serious altercation, insisting that no disciplinary measures will be taken against the Uruguayan forward.
Addressing the situation, Borges stated that absolutely nothing happened and that Suárez was frustrated at the end of a ten-against-ten practice game while working to reach his best form. Borges explained that players were permitted to go straight to the dressing room after the session before completing a brief one- or two-minute complementary drill, and that Suárez returned immediately when called back.
Borges called the attention given to the matter ridiculous and stated that no disciplinary case exists because Suárez did not disrespect anyone. He denied reports claiming Suárez kicked a ball and assaulted a coach, calling those statements untrue. Borges added that while competitive players like Suárez, Maxi Araújo, and former striker Gyokeres show strong emotion, no individual is above Sporting or the team.
Match Lineup and Squad Absences
Suárez is expected to start on the bench against Estrela da Amadora tonight, with Ioannidis starting in attack. Borges did not confirm the lineup but acknowledged that Suárez is not yet in top physical condition following an exhausting season that included 90-minute appearances and World Cup duty, though he confirmed the striker is in the squad and available.
Speaking about Italian signing Doumbia, Borges described him as a youngster with enormous potential whom Sporting secured well in advance, knowing they would stand no chance at season's end. Borges said Doumbia has a bright future if he stays true to himself, noting he enjoys listening, learning, training, and is happy.
Sporting face several line-up exclusions. Maxi Araújo is suspended, while Debast, Ba, Nuno Santos, João Simões, and Blopa are out injured. Additionally, Pote and Bragança were left out of the squad by technical decision.
