Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk opened their Champions League main round campaign with a 1-1 draw against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven at the Philips Stadion.
Mendoza opened the scoring for the visitors deep into first-half stoppage time, before Dest restored parity for PSV shortly after the restart.
Mendoza broke the deadlock in the first minute of added time at the end of the opening half. He moved into the left side of the penalty box, set himself up, and fired past Geertruida into the far corner of the net.
Dest leveled the score for the hosts in the 48th minute. Shakhtar had several chances to reclaim the lead late in the second half, but the Ukrainian team could not turn their late pressure into a second goal.
Disciplinary record and team lineups
Refereeing decisions saw six Shakhtar players cautioned during the encounter. Tobias picked up the first yellow card in the 35th minute, followed by Mendoza in the 47th, Pedro Henrique in the 55th, Bondar in the 63rd, Kryskiv in the 90th, and Marlon Gomes in the 91st minute.
PSV received three yellow cards, with Obispo booked in the 56th minute, van Bommel in the 65th, and Dest in the 81st minute.
Shakhtar started with Riznyk in goal, behind Pedro Henrique, Matviyenko, Bondar, Tobias, Ocheretko, Izaki, Marlon Gomes, Mendoza, Alisson, and Elias. Mendoza and Elias were substituted in the 67th minute for Neverton and Traore.
PSV named Kovar in goal, with Kostic, Obispo, Geertruida, Dest, Wanner, Sano, Til, van Bommel, Pepi, and Perisic in the outfield. Flamingo replaced Kostic in the 68th minute, and Mijnans came on for Pepi in the 83rd minute.
Next Champions League match and venue
Shakhtar will play their next Champions League match on October 14 against AEK. The fixture is scheduled to take place at Stamford Bridge in London.
