Goalkeeper Kaique Pereira, 23, is due to travel to Lisbon on Tuesday to sign a five-season contract with Sporting Clube de Portugal, in a deal worth four million euros, according to Correio da Manhã. The Brazilian arrives from Palmeiras, where he remains on the club's books.
The signing is intended to fill the gap left by goalkeeper João Virgínia, who is on his way out of Sporting's Alvalade home, while also putting more pressure on first-choice goalkeeper Rui Silva.
Concern over Rui Silva
Rui Silva continues to have the confidence of Sporting's football structure and head coach Rui Borges. But Correio da Manhã reported that some of his performances last season caused a degree of concern among club officials, who at one point even considered signing a top-level goalkeeper capable of taking over as the team's number one.
Two seasons on loan in Portugal
Although he remains contracted to Palmeiras, under head coach Abel Ferreira, Kaique has spent the past two seasons on loan in Portugal. He played for Faro-based club Farense in 2024/25 and, last season, for Nacional, where he stood out and caught Sporting's attention.
Sporting's football management believe the goalkeeper, who has represented Brazil at under-20 level, can be a bigger threat to Rui Silva's starting place than João Virgínia was last season, and that he could be called on to take over the number one jersey at any point. Virgínia is leaving Sporting, most likely for Turkish football, Correio da Manhã reported.
Size and profile appeal to Sporting
Standing 1.93 metres tall and weighing 82 kilograms, Kaique is regarded within Sporting's football structure as a goalkeeper with a strong future at Alvalade. Officials believe his physical qualities and characteristics will give Rui Silva more competition for the starting role.
Second choice at Palmeiras
At Palmeiras, Kaique has played in the shadow of Carlos Miguel, Abel Ferreira's preferred goalkeeper. Correio da Manhã reported that it was precisely this backup status that led Kaique not to hesitate when Sporting made contact, in the hope that he can win the starting spot in Lisbon in the medium term.
Sporting Clube de Portugal, one of Portugal's three traditional giants, play their home matches at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon. Palmeiras, based in São Paulo, are one of Brazil's most successful clubs and have been coached by the Portuguese Abel Ferreira since 2020.
