Spanish football club Valencia have officially appointed 67-year-old Mexican manager Javier Aguirre as their new head coach until the end of the current season.
The Spanish club entered the market for a new manager following the dismissal of Carlos Corberan. The former Olympiacos head coach departed the bench after paying the price for Valencia's poor start to the La Liga campaign.
Prior to turning to Aguirre, club officials had examined the possibilities of two other managers with past experience at Greek side Olympiacos. Ernesto Valverde and Jose Luis Mendilibar were identified as the club's initial choices, but both coaches turned down the approach.
Valencia subsequently proceeded with the selection of the former Mexico national team head coach, formalizing the agreement to begin their partnership and take charge of the team.
Contract details and managerial background
The deal agreed with Aguirre runs until the conclusion of the current season and includes an option for an additional year. Activation of that extra year will depend on whether club management remains satisfied with the work of the Mexican coach on the team's bench.
Valencia, commonly known by their nickname the Bats, are one of the traditional powers in Spanish football and compete in top-flight La Liga. The club, based in Valencia, has been seeking stability on the sidelines following early struggles in the league competition.
Aguirre brings extensive experience in international and Spanish club football to the managerial role. The Mexican manager has previously led the Mexico national team during major international tournaments across two separate spells and has managed several La Liga clubs throughout his career.
Valverde and Mendilibar are also veteran Spanish coaches with distinguished records in La Liga who previously managed Olympiacos in Greek football. Corberan leaves Valencia after a brief spell, having previously managed teams in England and Greece prior to his appointment in Spain.
