Viktor Hovland and American Ryan Gerard claimed a share of the halfway lead at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club on Friday. Both players reached 10 under par at the end of the second round in Atlanta to move one stroke clear of the field.
Hovland, the 2023 FedExCup champion, birdied the par-five last hole to post a four-under-par round of 66. Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup fired matching rounds of 67 to sit tied for third place on nine under.
Cameron Young produced the round of the day with an eight-under 62, charging from joint-bottom of the leaderboard into a tie for fifth place on eight under. Young capped his low round with a long-range eagle on the par-five final hole.
Scottie Scheffler joined Young on eight under after posting a three-under 67 to stay firmly in FedExCup contention. Scheffler surged up the leaderboard by making five birdies in a seven-hole stretch around the turn.
Congested leaderboard standings
English duo Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick sit three strokes back on seven under alongside Sweden's Ludvig Åberg and Australia's Adam Scott. The tight leaderboard leaves 19 players in the 29-man field separated by just five shots heading into the weekend.
Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood lies six shots off the pace on four under par. Three-time FedExCup winner Rory McIlroy fell a further stroke behind to sit on three under after two rounds of play.
