Wyndham Clark established a five-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay heading into the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday.
Clark built a commanding cushion at the top of the leaderboard, leaving McIlroy and Cantlay tied in second place as his primary challengers for the PGA Tour title.
In addition to the tournament victory, players are battling for position in the FedExCup standings. Only the top 30 golfers in the standings at the end of the BMW Championship will advance to the season-ending Tour Championship.
Chasing the leader
McIlroy entered the final round aiming to mount a comeback and erase the five-shot deficit behind Clark. The Northern Irishman has been searching for peak form during the playoff stretch as he chases another PGA Tour victory.
Cantlay matched McIlroy five strokes off the lead, setting up a final-day pursuit involving two of golf's most experienced playoff competitors. Both players require a strong finish to pressure Clark on the closing holes.
Clark, an American golfer who achieved a career breakthrough by winning the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, has established himself among the game's top players. A victory at the BMW Championship would mark another significant title in his professional career.
FedExCup Playoff stakes
The BMW Championship is the penultimate event of the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs. The playoff series begins with the top 70 players in the standings before narrowing to 50 players for the BMW Championship and finally the top 30 for the finale.
McIlroy remains the only three-time FedExCup champion in PGA Tour history, having won the playoff trophy in 2016, 2019 and 2022. Cantlay also has a strong pedigree in the event, having claimed the FedExCup title in 2021 alongside back-to-back BMW Championship victories in 2021 and 2022.
Golfers who finish in the top 30 following Sunday's final round will earn entry to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. Qualifying for the Tour Championship grants players exemptions into all four major championships and signature events for the following PGA Tour season.
Live television coverage of the final round is being broadcast on Sky Sports Golf.
