Top-flight Polish club Zagłębie Lubin suffered an early exit from the Polish Cup on Tuesday, September 1, after losing 3-2 away to third-tier side Siarka Tarnobrzeg.
The home team took an early lead in the sixth minute when Zagłębie defender Maciej Urbański scored an own goal. That early setback left the visiting Ekstraklasa side trailing 1-0 at the half-time interval.
Siarka Tarnobrzeg doubled their advantage shortly after the second half began when Patryk Peciak scored. Zagłębie pulled a goal back in the 65th minute through Damian Michalski, but Adrian Kromka restored the hosts' two-goal cushion by scoring in the 77th minute to make it 3-1.
Zagłębie responded late in the match when Arkadiusz Woźniak converted a penalty in the closing minutes. However, the late strike was not enough to force extra time, leaving the top-division club knocked out of the tournament.
Coach calls performance a disgrace
Zagłębie Lubin head coach Leszek Ojrzyński expressed deep frustration with his team following the defeat. Speaking at a post-match press conference quoted by club media, Ojrzyński congratulated Siarka on their victory over an Ekstraklasa team while admitting that his own side contributed directly to their own failure.
The manager stated that such errors should not happen during a match. He noted that although statistical metrics favored Zagłębie, numbers do not win games on the pitch. Ojrzyński commended the opponents for playing with ambition and courage, while observing that his own players panicked under pressure.
Ojrzyński explained that he had selected a line-up featuring several young players while leaving a number of squad members back home in Lubin. He said he had expected the team sent to Tarnobrzeg to manage the fixture, calling the final outcome a very significant lesson for himself.
Offering an apology to the traveling supporters, the head coach said everyone at the club must look each other in the eye and take responsibility for the performance. He described the result as a disgrace for the team and emphasized that the players must demand more of themselves, adding that they must move forward and see what happens next.
Focus turns to domestic league fixtures
Zagłębie Lubin, nicknamed Miedziowi, play in the Ekstraklasa, the top tier of the Polish football league system, and are based in the southwestern city of Lubin. Siarka Tarnobrzeg compete in the third tier of Polish football and play their home matches in Tarnobrzeg, located in southeastern Poland. The annual Polish Cup, known locally as Puchar Polski, is the nation's premier knockout tournament, bringing together clubs from across all tiers of Polish football.
Following their early elimination from the knockout competition at the start of September, Zagłębie Lubin have only their PKO BP Ekstraklasa fixtures remaining for the rest of the campaign. Ojrzyński's side currently occupy ninth place in the league table with eight points from five games, having recorded two wins, two draws, and one defeat.
