Zagłębie Lubin were held to a 0-0 Ekstraklasa draw by ten-man Pogoń Szczecin on Saturday after forward Filip Cuić was sent off in the first half.
Both teams entered the match seeking three points following draws in the previous round of fixtures, where Zagłębie had drawn 0-0 with Radomiak Radom and Pogoń had recorded a 2-2 draw against Wisła Kraków.
Zagłębie Lubin, known as Miedziowi, and Pogoń Szczecin, known as Portowcy, are both competing in the Ekstraklasa, the top tier of Polish professional football.
Pogoń Szczecin started the stronger side, creating two clear scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. In the fifth minute, Kellyn Acosta failed to capitalize on a pass from Maciej Wojciechowski, and four minutes later a shot from Paul Mukairu was blocked, leaving goalkeepers Zlatan Alomerović and Valentin Cojocaru largely untested.
Red card and rising tempers
The match turned in the 23rd minute when Bosnian forward Filip Cuić knocked down Zagłębie defender Damian Michalski before deliberately kicking him in the ribs. Referee Paweł Raczkowski of Warsaw immediately issued a direct red card to Cuić, triggering scuffles and protests on the pitch.
During the confrontation, referee Raczkowski booked Zagłębie midfielder Filip Kocaba and Pogoń goalkeeper Cojocaru. As tempers flared across every tackle, Raczkowski booked four more players before half-time, issuing yellow cards to Zagłębie players Kosidis, Nowogoński, and Jakuba, as well as Pogoń midfielder Acosta.
Despite the physical play, both sides had chances to open the scoring before the break. Marcel Reguła threatened for Zagłębie in the 35th minute, while Mukairu saw another chance five minutes later, but neither player could break the deadlock.
Zagłębie pressure and disallowed goal
Zagłębie Lubin pushed forward more aggressively after the interval to exploit their numerical advantage. Pogoń goalkeeper Cojocaru saved a strike from Reguła, and in the 60th minute, Reguła, who was named the best young player of the previous season, struck a long-range shot that Cojocaru parried into the path of Sebastian Kerk, who tapped in from an offside position, causing the goal to be ruled out.
Owner confrontation and late chances
The intensity extended off the pitch as well. According to journalist Sebastian Szczytkowski, Pogoń owner Alex Haditaghi was unable to cope with the tension of the match from the stands. Haditaghi walked down near the substitute benches to argue with the fourth official before taking a seat close to the pitch.
On the pitch, Zagłębie struggled to convert their extra man into goals, while ten-man Pogoń created little until the 77th minute, when Patryk Dziczek hit a volley that narrowly missed the post. Both coaches made tactical changes, with Zagłębie bringing on Kerk for Nowogoński at half-time, Sypek for Mlinarić and Szymczak for Kosidis in the 69th minute, and Łyczko for Grzybek in the 84th minute, while Pogoń introduced Mendy for Czurlinow at half-time, Ulvestad for Acosta in the 63rd minute, Biegański for Wojciechowski in the 74th minute, and Juwara for Mukairu in stoppage time.
In stoppage time, Zagłębie had a final chance to win the match when Aleks Ławniczak flicked the ball into the box toward Filip Szymczak. Szymczak slid in to attack the ball, but Cojocaru produced a brilliant save to preserve the 0-0 draw and secure a point for Pogoń Szczecin.
