Anthony Gordon made his first appearance for Barcelona as the Spanish champions recorded a 5-2 pre-season friendly victory against Swiss side Basel.

The 25-year-old winger completed a £70m transfer from Premier League side Newcastle United at the end of May, prior to the World Cup. Barcelona moved quickly to secure his signature at the end of last season, having monitored his progress in England. However, supporters were forced to wait for his debut following England's run to the World Cup semi-finals, which resulted in an extended post-tournament break and a late start to his pre-season training.

Operating on the left of Barcelona's attack, Gordon made an immediate impression in the opening minutes of the match. The England international displayed his pace by accelerating past his marker and firing a dangerous low cross into the penalty area, though neither Eric Garcia nor Raphinha were able to finish the chance.

Gordon continued to pose a constant threat on the flank throughout the first half, making several darting dribbles and looking to supply crosses from the byline for the Catalan side.

Bright opening half performance

Gordon's eye-catching start was nearly capped with an individual goal midway through the first period. Picking up the ball in the Basel half, the winger drove directly toward the opposition goal, forced a slip from the defending full-back, cut onto his right foot, and sent a powerful shot narrowly over the crossbar.

Gordon ultimately featured only in the first half of the match as he continues to build toward full fitness ahead of the new campaign. Despite having trained with the squad for only the past week, Spanish newspaper AS reported that the winger has already convinced Barcelona manager Hansi Flick to award him a starting role in the side.

Flick, who was appointed to lead Barcelona following previous managerial spells with Bayern Munich and the German national team, is preparing his squad to defend their domestic title and compete in European competition.

Media and fan reaction

Spanish media outlets were quick to highlight Gordon's impact. Barcelona-based newspaper Sport declared that the winger was the Catalans' "best player in attack" following his "very, very active" first-half display.

Another journalist praised his contribution, noting: "Great minutes from Gordon in the friendly match between Barça and Basel. The Englishman is increasingly shaking off his marker and has delivered some fine crosses into the box."

Barcelona supporters were equally enthusiastic about the signing, with many taking to social media to label him the "best player on the pitch" and express optimism about his role for the season ahead.

One fan posted: "Gordon is such a breath of fresh air. He looks so electric and who needed zero adaption. Looking forward to him."

Another supporter commented: "Barcelona finally has a left winger that takes on defenders one on one Anthony Gordon. What a diamond."

Fellow new signing Karim Adeyemi was on target in Barcelona's 5-2 victory over Basel

A third added: "Gordon will provide something that Barca has been lacking in recent seasons, a threat on the outside on the left. Also allows us to push the left sided midfielder higher and between the lines."

Summer transfer context and match details

Barcelona, who reclaimed the LaLiga title last season ahead of domestic rivals Real Madrid, prioritized Gordon's signing at the start of the summer window. The Catalan club chose to pursue the former Newcastle winger rather than making Marcus Rashford's loan move permanent after the Manchester United forward spent last season on loan in Spain.

Gordon had already won over local supporters prior to his debut by speaking fluent Spanish during his official unveiling, where he revealed that playing for the Catalan giants had been a childhood dream.

Barcelona ultimately ran out 5-2 winners against Basel, the Swiss Super League club based at St. Jakob-Park. Fellow new signing Karim Adeyemi, the German forward acquired during the summer transfer window, opened the scoring for Barcelona in the first half.

Hamza Abdelkarim and Spanish international winger Lamine Yamal were also on target, while a brace from Jesse Bisiwu rounded off the scoring to seal a convincing pre-season win for Flick's team.
