Arsenal won the Community Shield with a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester City in Cardiff on Sunday, August 16, just one week before the start of the new Premier League season.
Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring after just 23 seconds before Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard added goals to seal an emphatic win for manager Mikel Arteta's side.
Arsenal took control of the contest immediately. Calafiori found the back of the net in the opening minute to give the Gunners an early lead. Manchester City controlled the tempo of play in the minutes that followed but struggled to create dangerous situations in front of goal.
City had a good opportunity in the 21st minute when Phil Foden struck towards the bottom left corner of the net, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya dealt with the shot without major trouble. Arsenal remained clinical and doubled their advantage in the 28th minute when Christos Tzolis flicked on a cross with his head into the path of Havertz, who headed past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to make it 2-0 in Cardiff.
Erling Haaland attempted to pull City back into the match before the break, unleashing a dangerous shot in the 40th minute. However, Raya was alert once again to preserve the two-goal cushion, ensuring Arsenal entered the half-time interval leading 2-0.
Second half dominance
Arsenal maintained their significant advantage from the start of the second half. In the 48th minute, Tzolis set up Odegaard, and the Norwegian midfielder fired home a confident strike to extend the lead to 3-0.
Manchester City attempted to respond in the 50th minute when Anderson tried to surprise Raya with a strike from the edge of the penalty box, but his effort flew well over the crossbar. Odegaard's goal effectively killed the match as a contest, with little action following in Cardiff over the next several minutes.
City tested Raya again in the 74th minute through a good strike from Rayan Cherki, but the Arsenal keeper was on guard once more. Arsenal almost added a fourth goal in the 80th minute when Hincapie delivered a fantastic pass into the penalty box for Bukayo Saka, but the Gunners leader shot over the crossbar.
City created one of their best opportunities of the match in the 81st minute when Jeremy Doku hit an opportunistic strike from inside the penalty area. However, it was not enough to beat Raya, who produced a sensational performance in goal. Arsenal held on to claim a clean sheet and a 3-0 win.
