Aston Villa have officially signed Italian left back Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid on a permanent transfer following a single season in Spain.

The 24-year-old defender joins the Premier League side after the two clubs agreed a deal reported by Spanish newspaper AS to be worth 25 million euros in fixed fees alongside further variable add-on payments.

Ruggeri leaves Atletico Madrid after making 47 appearances across all competitions during his single campaign at the Metropolitano Stadium. Although the Italian international featured regularly under manager Diego Simeone, he struggled to establish himself as an indispensable starter in the Spanish capital.

Atletico had signed Ruggeri from Italian Serie A side Atalanta to address persistent instability on the left flank of their defence. The Spanish club had been seeking a reliable option in the position since the departure of former Brazil international Filipe Luis, placing their trust in Ruggeri to adapt to Simeone's demanding tactical system.

Squad competition at Atletico Madrid

However, the landscape at the Metropolitano shifted following the signing of Spanish left back Alejandro Grimaldo. Grimaldo's arrival created intense competition for places in the squad, leaving Ruggeri with reduced opportunities to secure a permanent starting role and making him a candidate for a move during the summer transfer window.

For Atletico Madrid, selling Ruggeri allows the club to generate significant transfer revenue just twelve months after his arrival. The sale also frees up crucial space in the squad as the club continues to reshape its roster ahead of the upcoming season.

Unai Emery and Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery targeted Ruggeri as a player with considerable potential for further development. The Birmingham-based club views the defender as a physical option capable of providing stamina, defensive work rate, and attacking depth along the left wing.

The move offers Ruggeri a fresh start in English football after a brief spell in La Liga. The Premier League will present a higher level of physical intensity, giving the former Atalanta player an opportunity to replicate the form he displayed during his initial breakthrough in Italy.

Atletico search for replacement

Spanish second-tier side Racing de Santander's player Jorge Salinas has emerged as one of the potential candidates being monitored by Atletico Madrid as they seek to reinforce the left back position following Ruggeri's exit.

Ruggeri leaves Spain with mixed results after a high volume of matches failed to yield a long-term position in the starting eleven. Aston Villa now hope the Italian can take a significant step forward under Emery, while Atletico continue their search for stability on the left side of their defence.
