Barcelona is considering a move for Manchester City midfielder Rodri, according to The Athletic, which reported that sources close to the negotiations, speaking anonymously to protect their relationships, said the club had held talks with the player's entourage about the terms of a potential transfer.
Real Madrid had appeared to be leading the race for the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner, but Barcelona has a strong chance of pulling off the deal if it can raise the funds, according to the report.
Rodri said to have made his choice
Spanish outlet Jijantes FC reported on X that Rodri has already decided which club he wants to join. His Manchester City contract still has 11 months to run, but he does not intend to stay, the outlet said, adding that Rodri has chosen Barcelona and given the green light to Hansi Flick's project, with the club now preparing to finalize the transfer.
A stylistic fit
The Athletic said Flick's Barcelona plays a style most similar to City's from last season, dominating the ball, holding a high line and creating chances through intricate passing sequences rather than long direct balls. Real Madrid also seeks to control possession, the outlet noted, but has leaned more on quick counterattacks in recent seasons.
Transfer fee reported at 60 million euros
Media reports put the fee at around 60 million euros, described as not excessive given Rodri's status as reigning Ballon d'Or winner and World Cup-winning captain who was also named best player of the tournament. Barcelona will still need to work hard to raise the sum. Rodri has spent seven years at Manchester City, playing 298 matches with 28 goals and 32 assists.
