The decision of the Executive Committee of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to withdraw the Russian women’s team from participation in the European Championship qualifying tournament in 2023 is bad news for everyone, said the team head coach Alexander Kovalev.
FIBA announced the decision on Monday. In the spring, the organization announced the suspension of Russian teams from participating in competitions under its auspices in 2022 due to the situation in Ukraine.
– Emotions are difficult to contain, very unpleasant news for me, all the technical staff, the management. Maybe it was planned, but we were hoping and expecting FIBA to allow both our team and Belarus. It seems that initially the ban was imposed only at the World Cup,” Kovalev told .
The European Basketball Championship in 2023 will take place in Slovenia and Israel.
