Referee who judged more than 1,000 NBA games dies of cancer at 55

Referee Tony Brown, who served 20 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), has died of cancer at the age of 55, according to the league’s press service.

According to media reports, Brown was diagnosed with the disease in early 2021, but the referee returned to the NBA last season as a video replay center assistant.

During his career, Brown refereed 1,110 NBA regular season games, as well as 35 playoff games. In the 2019/20 season, Brown worked on the NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat (4-2).
