The Argentine point guard had his first minutes with the Mavericks in his team’s 113-111 loss to the visiting New Orleans Pelicans.
Facundo Campazzo made his debut on Tuesday with the Dallas Mavericks in his team’s 113-111 loss to the visiting New Orleans Pelicans, where scored three points in just thirteen minutes on the court.
Campazzo, a former Real Madrid and Denver Nuggets player, made his Mavericks debut early in the first quarter and scored his first points with a 3-pointer to open the fourth period and give Jason Kidd’s men of short-term leadership. The Argentine, wearing the number two jersey of the Texan team, also dished out two assists and had two steals.
The Mavericks surrendered in New Orleans despite a double double of 37 points and eleven rebounds from the Slovenian Luka Doncicwho also dished out seven assists.
The Pelicans hit the table on a day without Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, their brightest stars. Trey Murphy, with 22 points, led a group of eight Pelicans players in double figures, with Puerto Rican José Alvarado contributing thirteen points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Spaniard Willy Hernangómez has no minutes in his team’s rotation.
Campazzo, 31, returns this year to share a locker room with Luka Doncic, with whom he has played in real Madrid. During his Spanish stage, the point guard won two Euroleagues with Real Madrid, in 2015 and 2018, and three league titles, in 2015, 2018 and 2019.
The Argentine averaged 5.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 20.1 minutes per game over the last two seasons with the Nuggets. However, his popularity declined last year, particularly in the playoffs, when he played just 3.4 minutes on average over four games.
Last summer, the Nuggets did not renew his contract and Campazzo became a free agent. After several weeks of speculation about his future, including the possibility of a return to Europe, the Mavericks selected him to improve their squad for the new season.
