Former basketball player of the USSR national team and CSKA Moscow Alzhan Zharmukhamedov died at the age of 79 after a long illness, reports the Reds-Blues press service.
– Today, after a long illness, the great player of CSKA and the national team of our country Alzhan Zharmukhamedov died. CSKA expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alzhan Musurbekovich.
Zharmukhamedov played for CSKA for 11 seasons, with the team he won the European Champions Cup and became the USSR champion 10 times. With the USSR national team, the basketball player won gold at the 1972 Olympics, bronze at the 1976 Olympics, silver and bronze at the world championships, and also became a three-time European champion.
In 2012, a symbolic T-shirt with Zharmukhamedov’s number was hoisted under the arches of the CSKA basketball arena.
