“Zharmukhamedov has always been for justice and spoke the truth to his face. He was a holy man” – Eremin

olympic medalist Stanislav Yeremin in a conversation with , he called the deceased Olympic champion Alzhan Zharmukhamedov a great basketball player with excellent human qualities.

On Saturday it became known that Zharmukhamedov died at the age of 79 after a long illness. He played for CSKA for 11 seasons, with the team he won the European Cup and 10 times became champion of the USSR. With the USSR national team, the basketball player won gold at the 1972 Olympics, bronze at the 1976 Olympics, silver and bronze at the world championships, and also became a three-time European champion.

– He is a very great basketball player, our golden generation, who glorified Soviet and Russian basketball. I think Alzhan was a player of the highest level, the NBA level. He might not have been as brilliant as Ivan Edeshko and Sergey Belov, but in terms of playing level he was definitely comparable to them. Zharmukhamedov, as they say, played American – he is not very visible, but when you look at the statistics, you see 10 rebounds, 16 points, five steals. In terms of utility, it has always been one of the best. And he was a very good team player. A big loss for Soviet and Russian basketball.

He was a modest honest, honest, I would even say a holy man. Because he was always for justice and spoke the truth in his eyes. And that kind of embarrassed him, maybe didn’t allow him to achieve a position in the world. Not because he was worse than the others, but because his qualities do not correspond to the current mentality, to the current way of life.

Alzhan was a diverse person. He liked to read and carved wood very well.

I also remembered a rather curious episode with his participation. He has already retired as a basketball player and has not played for four years. I was still a CSKA player at the time. We had a situation where there were too many injuries. We remembered our snake from Turkestan Zharmukhamedov. We thought he would help us at least during the training process, invited him to the training. And when he came, he showed such game that everyone immediately spoke with one voice: “Let’s put him back in the team.” Because he wasn’t just comparable to those who played – he was better. Everyone was delighted.

The next day they discussed the question of his return. When they called him, he said, “I can’t get out of bed. After training, I can’t move my arm or leg for a day. This characterizes him as a person who cannot work at 50% – full dedication in any situation. I was lucky to play with him, – said Eremin “”.
