The Russian Basketball Federation (RBF) expressed its condolences on the website following the death of Olympic champion Alzhan Zharmukhamedov.
Zharmukhamedov died on Saturday at the age of 79 after a long illness.
“The CSR expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Alzhan Musurbekovich, and to all basketball fans in connection with this loss,” the message read.
Zharmukhamedov won the European Champions Cup with CSKA and became a 10-time USSR champion. With the USSR national team, the basketball player won gold at the 1972 Olympics, bronze at the 1976 Olympics, silver and bronze at the world championships, and also became a three-time European champion.
