American basketball player Greiner released from police custody in Russia to be traded for Viktor Bout – media

American basketball player Britney Greiner released from custody in Russia to be traded for Viktor Bout, CNN reports, citing sources.

— The US Embassy in Moscow was officially notified by the Russian government of Greiner’s transfer on November 23, more than two weeks after he was transferred from a Moscow prison to IK-2 in Mordovia. We are in constant contact with Ms Greiner’s legal team and know they were able to visit her this week, a US State Department spokesperson said.

Greiner was arrested in February while attempting to smuggle hash oil through Sheremetyevo airport. On August 4, the Khimki City Court sentenced an American woman to 9 years in a penal colony in a drug trafficking case. In October, the Moscow Regional Court upheld the verdict. In addition to the prison term, the basketball player was punished with a fine of 1 million rubles. The 32-year-old athlete was serving his sentence in penal colony No. 2 in the village of Yavas.

The basketball player, who has been playing for UMMC Yekaterinburg since 2015, twice won the Olympic Games as part of the American team (2016, 2020), took part in WNBA All-Star games seven times.
