FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis during the annual press conference answered the question about the possibility of hitting the teams Russia and Belarus basketball for the 2024 Olympic tournament.
The head of the organization recalled that, according to the qualification rules, the results of the world championships are qualifying for the Olympic Games. Teams from Russia and Belarus have been banned from participating in the 2022 Women’s World Cup in Australia, as well as the 2023 Men’s World Cup qualifying tournament in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
“I think it’s already too late. Teams from Belarus cannot qualify to participate in the 2024 Olympics based on qualifying tournaments. The same applies to the participation of the women’s team of Russia, – quoted Zagklis as News.cn .
FIBA announced in September that Russian and Belarusian clubs were suspended from participation in the Women’s Euroleague, Eurocup and FIBA Europe Cup in the upcoming season due to of the situation in Ukraine, the Russian men’s team was suspended from participation in EuroBasket, the women’s World Cup team.
