The leaders of Ukrainian basketball, handball and volleyball are trying to integrate into the tournaments of the Baltic countries, Germany and Poland
Russia’s large-scale military aggression against our country has made its own adjustments to the national championships. In three football divisions, everything was limited to the removal of a large number of clubs (here we are talking about the First and Second Leagues). In hockey – the loss of all the “refusenik” clubs that played in the Super League last season, including the Donbass. But basketball, handball and volleyball have lost their leading clubs: Prometheus misses the championship due to a conflict with the Basketball Federation of the country, volleyball Barkom-Kazany play in the Polish volleyball Super League, and handball Motor ended up in the Second German Bundesliga.
We evaluate how the tournament fate of the three leading Ukrainian clubs develops on “legionary bread”.
PROMETHEUS
The leading Ukrainian basketball club of recent years keeps the brand. Prometheus, who has chosen Riga as his temporary residence, is in first place in the championship of the Latvian-Estonian League. In 13 league matches, the Ukrainian team has 12 wins and one loss (November 19 from Kalev). VEF, which is in second place, has the same 12 victories, but in 15 matches.
Quite successfully, Prometheus also performs in the Eurocup. After nine rounds played, the Ukrainians are in fourth place (five wins and four losses). Similar results, by the way, and Venice, which occupies the third line.
MOTOR
But the best Ukrainian men’s handball club is not yet impressive. A regular participant in the Champions League – Motor – is still among the outsiders of the Second German Bunesliga. Yes, now the composition of the Zaporizhzhya is far from what it was a couple of years ago, but still the results of the flagship of Ukrainian handball are depressing.
After 16 rounds, Motor, whose temporary home is Düsseldorf, is in 18th place out of 20 teams, being in the relegation zone. The asset has three wins, a draw and 12 losses. With seven points, Motoro is four points behind the saving 17th place, and 22 points behind the leader.
Motor scored points mainly in matches with the same outsiders: victories over Wolf Wützburg (20th place at the moment) and Rostock (19th position), a draw with Grossschwaldt (13th place). Only the victory over Potsdam (8th position) stands out from the general series.
The results of the Motor in the second most important European Cup are not encouraging either. After six rounds played, the Zaporizhzhya team occupies an impassable, fifth place in its group. Motor has a victory, a draw and four defeats. Moreover, Motor took all his points in matches with the worst team in the group – the Portuguese Aquas Santas. True, Zaporozhan are only two points behind the fourth position, which allows them to get into the playoffs.
BARKOM-KAZHANY
Volleyball Barkom-Kazany, which received a place in the elite division of the Polish championship, is based in Krakow in a neighboring country. In the championship, things are not going well for the Lviv team so far: three wins and 13 losses in 16 matches. As a result, 14th place in the table with 16 participants in the championship. The gap from the relegation zone is 12 points, from the eighth place Barkom-Kazhany are behind by the same 12 points.
Two out of three victories, the Lviv team won over outsiders – Czarni Radom (15th place) and Bielsko-Biała (16th position), and also once defeated the representative of the top part of the table – Belchatow, who is currently in the last passer, eighth place .
