Vatutin: “There are no attractive basketball tournaments in Asia, but the share of expenses would be very large”

President of CSKA Andrey Vatutin told the likelihood of Russian teams participating in Asian competitions.

In March, the Euroleague announced that CSKA, Zenit Saint Petersburg and UNICS Kazan were excluded from the tournament due to the situation in Ukraine, their results were cancelled. Russian clubs are also not participating in the new European Cup season.

– Is it wise to follow the example of football to look towards the East?

— As a potential vector for development, this market cannot be ruled out. I am thinking, first of all, of national teams of all ages. We played twice in China, got acquainted with what we saw with interest. But with all due respect to Asian colleagues, I don’t think there are attractive club tournaments for our teams. The level of basketball in Asia is lower and the flights are much longer. Friendly or commercial matches are possible, long-term competition is unlikely, there is no economic basis for this, but there is a large part of the expense. And there was no signal on that side. The Euroleague has already opened an office in China, but now, as far as I know, it is not working. Football, for many reasons, has more reason to count on a reorientation to the East.

The winning streak of CSKA, leader of the VTB United League since the start of the season, is 17 games.
