The president of CSKA basketball: “The legionnaires work for their bread, why lower the barrier limit and show them the door?”

President CSKA Andrey Vatutin told of the likely reduction in foreigners at Russian clubs.

At the moment, two Americans, two Serbs and a Frenchman are in the army club’s bid.

– What is your attitude towards a possible reduction of legionnaires?

– An eternal theme, like a glass half empty or full. The simplest and most primitive way is to blame the Legionnaires for all the problems in our basketball.

I don’t want to talk about other sports, but the current limit of basketball makes it possible to find a reasonable balance between Russians and foreigners. There will always be people with a different logic, but due to the increased qualifications of managers, Russian clubs have learned to invite good players who go to the public. Take Casper Weir: he played in Krasnoyarsk, ended up at CSKA and now it just seems indispensable. There are such players in Kazan, St. Petersburg and Krasnodar.

I’ve always thought that in healthy competition, Russians are much more likely to progress than under artificially created boundary restrictions. Foreigners are already coming to us, overcoming doubts, many contracts are broken just because nearby players are against a trip to Russia, and we are lowering the barrier even further. Who will play? People work for their bread, put on a show, why show them the door?!
