USSR national team world champion, basketball coach Stanislav Yeremin urged Russian sports officials to develop national competitions.
– In the current situation in the world and in Russia, there is no reason to look to the future with optimism. I know what many players are going through because we are deprived of forums such as the Euroleague, European and World Championships. And the coaches are worried about that. After all, international tournaments are vacation, business, development.
On the other hand, our Russian people are used to living in all conditions. I think now we need to worry less about what happened and why. We need to look to the future and think about how we should live. We often talk with veterans: we have to turn our backs on our basketball and on sport in general. And try to take the same positions that the Soviet Union once held,” Eremin said.
– Foreigners, be they players or coaches, can’t be kept only by money?
— The sense of proportion is the hardest thing to find and observe. We don’t need to expel anyone from Russia or to “close” ourselves to everyone, not to invite foreigners. But we have a lot of talented young people ourselves – it’s not just about sports. And she should have a chance. And it’s how much the leadership of our country and our sport will give young people a chance to realize themselves, everything will depend on that. This is the most important question,” Eremin told RB Sport.
