Greiner, a basketball player convicted in Russia and traded for Bout, signed a contract with the WNBA club

The Phoenix Mercury Women’s NBA (WNBA) club announced on its website that it had signed a contract with an American basketball player Britney Griner .

The deal with the 32-year-old center is for one year. Griner played for Phoenix from 2013 to 2022, became WNBA champion in 2014 and was recognized as the league’s best defensive player.

Brittney Griner has officially signed to play for the Mercury in 2023, it’s a big day for all of us. We missed BG every day and we missed her on the floor, in the locker room, at the club and in our community,” Phoenix general manager Jim Pitman said.

Also from 2015 to 2022, Greiner played for Russian club UMMC, with which she won the national championship. With the American team, she won two Olympic gold medals.

Greiner was arrested in February last year while attempting to illegally import hash oil through Sheremetyevo airport. On August 4, the Khimki City Court sentenced an American woman to 9 years in a penal colony in a drug trafficking case. In December, the athlete was traded for businessman Viktor Bout, who was sentenced in the United States in 2012 to 25 years on multiple counts.
