Basketball 1×1 in the octagon may soon reach the world level, such a format of this sport carries a new idea, the creator of the tournament Basketball 1×1 Liga Stavok – B1BOX, former player of the Russian national team , is convinced Victor Keyru .

— What is the concept of the tournament?
— We choose basketball players based on their individual skills. They should look organic and show off their best skills. We have about 20 players in the pool for the whole season, but specifically 12 players participate in each round. Professional referees work during the matches. The competitive concept itself is somewhat reminiscent of Formula 1. Our 2022/23 season consists of seven rounds. Each visit takes place approximately once a month. Each round is a kind of mini-tournament. Based on its results, the champion of a particular round is determined and, therefore, the owner of the championship belt. Based on the results of seven rounds, we have the winner of the entire championship, who becomes the owner of the championship belt throughout the season.
The philosophy here is that basketball as a team sport can still be great as an individual game. That is to say in 1×1 format. I am trying to develop this format. We also understand that combat sports are very popular in Russia, that’s why we developed the concept of playing basketball in the octagon. This underlines the uncompromising nature of this format and makes the tournament brutal and difficult.
Each round we have 60-70% of the players participating permanently.
– Who are the tournament participants?
– We have representatives of 5×5 and 3×3 basketball, and student basketball. This is Artem Isakov, winner of the Russian Basketball Cup, representative of the basketball club Runa Nikita Padun, titled 3×3 basketball player Alexander Antonikovsky. There are also participants from other countries: Milos Jovanovic from Montenegro, Makhailo Nikolic from Serbia and Sergey Kozlov from Belarus. And here it is important to identify which of them is the best in an individual game.
What are your expectations for the upcoming tour?
– It seems to me that, like the second round, it will bring surprises. The second round was won by Nikita Padun. He beat one of the tournament favorites Maxim Zakharov. It is likely that the upcoming tour will also be full of unpredictable moments.
— Can 1×1 basketball reach the world level?
– I think over time it will become one of the main formats in basketball. I’m 1000% sure. Our experience shows that the idea of basketball as an individual game is interesting. Whether or not it becomes an Olympic sport over time is not so important. Moreover, in fact we already have an international tournament. Will there be a 1×1 World Championship? I think there will be tournaments of this scale in the near future. It’s 100%. When exactly it will be under the auspices of FIBA, I don’t know. But for me it is not so important.
