USSR basketball team’s two-time Olympic medalist Jaak Lipso dies aged 83

Two-time Olympic medalist of the USSR national basketball team Jaak Lipso has died at the age of 82, the CSKA Moscow press service reported.

During his career, Lipso played for Kalev, SKA Riga and CSKA Moscow, where he spent eight seasons.

With the army team of the capital, Lipso twice won the European Champions Cup (1963, 1969), five gold medals of the USSR Championship (1962, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1969 ) and the gold of the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR (1963).

With the national team of the USSR, the striker twice became a winner of the Olympic Games (silver – 1964, bronze – 1968), became a world champion (1967) and three-time European champion (1963, 1965, 1967 ).

– At the age of 83, our team’s great ex-player, Jaak Lipso, has died. Lipso is one of the symbols of CSKA in the 60s. We express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Yaak Eduardovich,” CSKA said in a statement.
