Striker from St. Petersburg “Zenith” Sergei Monya told highlights of the VTB United League final series against CSKA Moscow, as well as plans for the future.
“Zenith became VTB United League champions for the first time in the 2021/22 season, beating CSKA 4-3 in the final series
– Could you imagine in the fall or New Year, making a wish, how this sports season will end for you?
– Before the New Year, I certainly could not imagine such a desire. Three and a half months ago we moved here, not thinking that everything would turn out so well. I’m happy we won the championship, especially with such a dramatic end in seven games. There is a lot of joy – to win the VTB United League gold medal at the end of his career, – Monya told .
– If you remember this series, what moment comes to your mind in the first place and which you will certainly remember for a long time?
Every victory and every defeat evoked emotions. It was a shame when we lost in two extra times, of course. But they won the next match in Moscow – they traded. Therefore, only positive emotions. There were very tense matches with UNICS Kazan – the first one was lost at home, after which they won three games in a row.
– After Zenit started to break the streak, many joked that at first you just gave CSKA a head start. What is the real reason for the bad start in the Final?
— CSKA played at home, played very powerfully. We hardly succeeded – we lost rebounds, we didn’t play very well in attack and defense. We drew conclusions, the coach made adjustments and confidently won the third game. The fourth game was dramatic, but I think the public liked it a lot: two overtimes and only with a siren they scored against us… For the fans, seven games were the best basketball party.
– Fans and specialists said that you still have to play and play with such form. You yourself said above “at the end of your career” – can we conclude that that’s all, or is there a chance to see you next season?
“There are no plans at the moment, to be honest. We take advantage of the moment. What will happen next – we will think.
