In the 2021/22 season, Zenit became VTB United League champions for the first time, beating CSKA Moscow 4-3 in the final series. After the end of the season-closing ceremony, Pascual refused to answer directly when asked if he would stay with the team.

– This happens after each season: when it ends, the club begins to form the team for the following year. Of course, we will have changes. I think everything will be known in the near future. As for the head coach, our position is unchanged, we will do everything to ensure that Javi Pascual continues to work at Zenit.
– Probably, the emotions after the victory have already calmed down a bit, how would you sum up the results of this season?
– Yes, no emotion has passed yet. They overwhelm us, I don’t know how long it takes them to leave, but it would be better if they stayed. Yesterday our coach said a very wise phrase during a team dinner: “Of course next season will be worse.” Why? Because this one was so good… We won everything we could, we got a 100% result, and of course it will be very difficult to repeat it. Now our task is for the club to continue to develop, even if it is difficult to find incentives when you have won everything. But for us, they remain, and we know what the next steps will be.
