Kirilenko is confident that Russia will be able to quickly get back into the international basketball movement as soon as the opportunity arises

President of the Russian Basketball Federation Andrei Kirilenko on ‘s Loud show, he said that Russia would be able to quickly get back into the international basketball movement when the necessary conditions for it appeared.

In early March, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) decided to withdraw all Russian national teams and teams, including 3×3 basketball, from all competitions under the organisation’s auspices.

– International relationships. What happens now? We were expelled from everywhere.

“It’s like a kind of reality for our sport today,” Kirilenko said on . – And I’m not a fan of making something up. Certain relationships exist, and we rely on them. We have excellent relations with FIBA, with our international organization. And until the last moment, even our women’s team could go to the United States to compete for the qualification for the World Cup, but visa problems prevented it. But we moved the qualification to the Dominican Republic, where we qualified. But once again, the situation that exists, it exists. Almost all sports are currently under quarantine. And our task from there is to see what we can do next. Have a plan A, a plan B. We are outside the international movement today. So our task is to develop our interior.

– What are your colleagues saying? Is this what you need? What to do to change everything?

— We have excellent relations with the international federation. We have many friends who support us. Everyone says sport is out of politics. But, unfortunately, this is not the case. We know it. Our task… We are still basketball players, we are not politicians. We are not epidemiologists whereas everyone became a virologist two years ago. Our task is to play basketball under the conditions we have today. As soon as the situation changes, I am sure that we will return to the international movement as soon as possible.

At the official level, many support us. But the situation is very delicate for everyone. This moment will hang in the air for now. Undoubtedly! Therefore, our task is to be ready for any development of events.

How are we going to file a complaint?

“Imagine, we are now in an international movement. What normal parent would now let their child go to the European side, where there is a risk of provocation? It’s a delicate moment. Can you imagine, 15-20 European countries don’t play with Russia, Russia is suddenly European champion. I would not want our team to become in such conditions.

We look for the positive and we know where to find that positive. The national championship and our own reserves are what we now pay attention to. This summer, we are fully dedicated to the national team, to work on our skills. The veterans will finally rest. This is the time to be valued.
