Head coach of Russia’s women’s basketball team calls IOC’s decision on admitting athletes tragic

Head coach of the Russian women’s basketball team Alexander Kovalev on the air of the program “All for the game!” on the channel “” said that the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC ) under the conditions of admission of Russian athletes is tragic.

The IOC on Tuesday recommended that international sports federations allow Russian athletes who do not support the CBO to compete in neutral individual status. These guidelines do not apply to team sports.

– For me, as for the head coach of the national team, it is sad and tragic. After losing match training in Europe, it will take time to recover and get back on track. Therefore, it is not the best option for us. But we are not stopping, we are going to get together and play,” Kovalev said on .

In February last year, the IOC Executive Board recommended federations not to invite Russians and Belarusians to compete due to the situation in Ukraine. In many sports, athletes from both countries were suspended from starts, some federations allowed them to be neutral without national symbols.

Subsequently, the head of the IOC Thomas Bach opposed political influence on sport and any proposal to treat Russian athletes as bearers of collective guilt.
