Honored Coach of Russia Sergei Elevitch told that he was not surprised by the decision of the Executive Committee of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to exclude the Russian team from the Olympiad-2024 qualifying tournament.
On Tuesday, the FIBA Executive Committee decided to deny the entry of the Russian men’s team to the 2023 Olympic pre-qualifiers.
“It didn’t surprise me. We all understood that we would not be allowed to qualify. This trail will continue for three or four years. They hate us there. But to mix sport and politics is to be stupid. What kind of people are sitting there? The whole world has changed! Are they sick or what? People don’t understand what they are doing,” Yelevich told .
In the selection, the Russian team will be replaced by the Bulgarian team as the next European team with the highest rating.
Due to the situation in Ukraine, Russian clubs and teams have been suspended from participating in tournaments under the auspices of FIBA.
The Paris Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
