The Executive Committee of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has decided to refuse the registration of the men’s team Russia during the 2023 Olympic pre-qualifiers, according to the FIBA website.
The Bulgarian national team, as the second highest ranked European team, will replace the Russian team in the selection.
– Following the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee on the participation of athletes with a Russian or Belarusian passport in international competitions, published on March 28, the FIBA Executive Committee has decided not to allow the registration of the Russian men’s team at the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments 2023.
Bulgaria, as the next highest-ranked European team, will be the last team to enter the Olympic pre-qualifiers, FIBA said in a statement.
The pre-qualifiers are scheduled from August 12 to 20, 2023. The five best teams will have the opportunity to play in the qualifying tournaments for the Paris Olympics.
Due to the situation in Ukraine, Russian clubs and teams have been suspended from participating in tournaments under the auspices of FIBA.
The Paris Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
