Vatutin called out the problems that will prevent Russian basketball clubs from returning to international tournaments

President of the basketball club CSKA Andrey Vatutin said on that logistical problems would prevent Russian teams from returning to international tournaments.

On Tuesday, the executive committee of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) decided to refuse the registration of the Russian men’s team for the 2023 Olympic pre-qualifiers. Russian clubs are suspended from participating in international competitions.

– They often ask: “When will we come back to the Euroleague?” I don’t like the linearity of thinking on these issues.

Imagine that the Euroleague brings us back. We can’t fly. When you have two Euroleague away games a week, you need a charter. Now there is no way to rent it, you cannot transfer money, rent a hotel. Many difficulties that do not allow to play in European tournaments for many logistical reasons.

I think the most correct thing is to rely on your own strength, to raise young people and give them a chance to play. Invite foreigners to problematic positions in the teams, but it makes no sense to take second-rate basketball players from abroad. It’s easier to give students a chance, but we’re in a difficult paradigm where we have to play our own and win the championship.

The group of Russian players, which is at CSKA, allows me to be optimistic. I don’t want to speculate, but in terms of the relationship within the team, the team and the coach, it’s been one of the best seasons, in terms of chemistry. There are no guarantees, but the guys like to play together, Vatutin told .
