The national basketball team has a new coach
FBU Secretary General Vladimir Drabikovsky commented on the appointment of Vitaliy Stepanovsky to the post of head coach of the Ukrainian men’s basketball team.
“We considered two candidates for Ukrainian coaches – Stepanovsky and Plekhanov. We also considered the candidacies of Zvezdan Mitrovic and Ronen Ginzburg.”
“We understood that we cannot pull Ginzburg purely financially, because he will not work for free. Mitrovic – we also understood that he would not work for nothing.”
“But we were negotiating, he said that he does not have a club now, and until he decides on a club, he cannot make such a decision. But he said that it would be a great honor for him to work with the Ukrainian team. And if he worked in the national team, then only in Montenegro or Ukraine. Because he believes that Ukraine is like a second home for him.”
“Regarding the Ukrainian coaches – we asked the members of the executive committee and the absolute majority was under Stepanovsky, I was even amazed.”
“Tasks for Stepanovsky? Getting into the European Championship 2025. This is a top priority. He will combine work in the national team with work in the Romanian region, there are no problems with this.”
Stepanovsky twice became the champion of Ukraine with Khimik as head coach and assistant. Also, under his leadership, the student team of Ukraine won silver medals at the 2019 Universiade.
Head coach of the Ukrainian national team Ainars Bagatskis left his post after qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. Under his leadership, the blue-and-yellows reached the 1/8 finals of EuroBasket 2022. In the selection for the 2023 World Cup, the Ukrainian team reached the second stage, but failed to qualify for the main tournament.
