Russian basketball referee Mikhail Grigoriev has died at the age of 77, the Russian Basketball Federation (RBF) press service has announced.
“The Russian Basketball Federation expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mikhail Petrovich, as well as to all basketball fans in connection with this loss,” the RFB said in a statement.
Grigoriev began his career in 1968 and has since competed in three Olympic Games, numerous men’s and women’s world and European championships. Grigoriev served matches of all European cups, matches of the national team of the USSR and Atlanta in 1988, the Spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR-1979, the final of the men’s tournament of the Universiade-1995.
In 1974, Grigoriev became a judge of the All-Union category, since 1977 – of the international category, and in 2001 – an honorary judge of the international category. In April this year, by order of the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin, he was awarded the honorary sports title “Honorary Sports Judge of Russia”.
