Honored Coach of Russia Stanislav Yeremin told that he has a positive view of the format of the VTB League Championship, which will take place in the 2022/23 season.
– First of all, of course, it is important to note that two Russian teams MBA and Samara will take place in the United League. It’s a very positive moment. The management of the VTB League is taking a very correct step. In my opinion, it is very good for our basketball. Of course, theoretically, one can argue that it would be better if more teams took part in the championship, but, probably, this should be introduced gradually so as not to upset the balance. As for the draw system, for twelve teams you can come up with different systems. For example, it was possible to play in four circles. But, and here my opinion coincides with the opinion of the league management: it’s better for the fans and for basketball when there are more matches between equal teams. It seems to me that today the best teams in the United League differ in their level of play from the teams that close the table. Therefore, in my opinion, this system is very successful: it gives, as before, the possibility for everyone to play against all opponents, and at the same time there will be more matches between the strongest teams in the phase of groups. And the sporting principle for those who do not enter the top 6 is also respected, since the second six are fighting for two places, allowing them to compete in the playoffs,” Eremin told .
In the new season, the VTB League regular season will be divided into two stages. In the first round, 12 clubs will play two rounds, after which the teams will be divided into two groups – group A (teams having taken 1 to 6 places) and group B (teams having taken 7 to 12 places). In the second stage, the teams will play each other in their groups for 2 more rounds. The first group will split the top six spots in the playoff bracket, in the second the rivals will compete for the two remaining tickets to the quarter-finals. The quarter-final series will be held up to three wins, semi-final and final – up to four.
