Former captain of the Russian national team Sergei Monya said he didn’t yet know what he would do after his playing career ended, but he would like to stay in basketball.
On Tuesday, Monya announced that he had graduated from basketball at the age of 40. The player’s last club was Petersburg “Zenith” for which he has been playing since last year.
“Until now, I haven’t even thought about it much. I’m going to rest a bit, stay with my family, spend time with them. Well, old wounds need to be healed, so I don’t have really thought about what I would do.
In general, of course, I want my future work to be related to basketball. You must do what you understand. I understand something in basketball, I would like to stay in basketball,” Moni told Zenit’s website.
In the 2022/23 season, the St. Petersburg club finished fourth in the VTB United League and defeated Lokomotiv Kuban in the latest UNICS series.
– The guys had a lot of problems – someone came during the season, someone left, injuries. We played with recessions, there probably wasn’t enough stability, so we alternated blowout wins with home defeats. It also affects the fact that there were many injuries. Of course there is grief, but we have to analyze everything, draw the right conclusions and prepare.
The final sign turned out to be unpredictable, but for the league it’s probably even better that the champions change every year, it’s more interesting for the public. Our sign with CSKA in the series for third place was also very interesting. Of course, we were thinking of at least playing the final, but we lost to UNICS in a dramatic ending. I think the audience liked the matches, they turned out spectacular – home and away, – said Monya.
Monya has previously played for Avtodor, CSKA, Portland, Sacramento, Dynamo Moscow, Khimki. As part of the Russian national team, he became the European champion and bronze medalist of the Olympics.
