Vatutin thinks a playoff to win the Euroleague would be fairer than the Final Four format

President CSKA Andrey Vatutine explained in an interview with why the current form of identifying the strongest in the Euroleague is not ideal.

The winner of Eurolga 2022/23 in May was Real Madrid, who beat Olympiacos Piraeus in the Final Four main game. In third and fourth place are Monaco and Barcelona.

— Of course, the Final Four has become a hallmark of the Euroleague, it’s convenient for everyone to gather in one place and watch three great games, I can’t attribute the game to them for the third place. But the system is not fair. Teams play 34 regular season games and then a maximum of five playoff games. During these two stages, coaches and management can still correct some mistakes. Real Madrid, we recall, lost in the series 0-2, but took three matches and reached the semi-finals. The problem is that a loss in the Final Four multiplies all your efforts to zero, both in basketball and in managerial terms. Olympiacos looked the strongest all season, Bartzokas became the best coach, Vezenkov got the MVP of the season and some mistakes at the end of the final – and all the achievements remained in the personal collection, not the club’s collection, the main prize went to someone else. Therefore, the playoff for first place is fairer, and one day the Euroleague will get there. But although it is difficult to combine with the ends of the national championships, Vatutin told .

CSKA, Zenit Saint Petersburg and UNICS Kazan have been excluded from the Euroleague since March 2022. Their results from last season have been cancelled. For the time being, the army team remains a shareholder of the Euroleague and cooperates with it in online negotiations.
