King James will change his number in honor of the Boston Celtics legend, Klutch Sports Group’s Rich Paul confirmed in an interview with ESPN. “It’s LeBron’s decision. He chose to do it out of respect for Bill Russell.”said Paul.
In August 2022, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association announced that to honor the incredible career of the 11-time champion and Celtics star they will permanently retire his number six from around the league. It should be noted that current players who have that number at that time are grandfathered in and can continue to use it if they wish. A year after this proposal, King James decided to join the tribute and leave the number where he played two seasons with the Lakers and four with the Miami Heat.
Bill Russell died on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at the age of 88 and became the first player to receive this honor by retiring his mythical number from the entire NBA. “For us, losing that icon is heartbreaking. The Lakers star will become the sixth player in NBA history to play 21 seasons, a list on which he appears alongside Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, Robert Parish, Kevin Willis and Vince Carter (the latter holds the all-time record of there are 22 courses in the elite).
