Milwaukee Bucks, two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo announced that he would not help the Greek national team at the Basketball World Championship due to injury.
The tournament will take place from August 25 to September 10 in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Everyone knows that my passion and love for the national team has never changed and will never change. After the NBA season ended, I pushed my body to the limit to be the player I need to be to help the team achieve its goals.
But after months of work and many meetings with the medical staff, it became clear that I was not ready to compete at the level I needed to compete in the World Championships. It was not a choice, but my only chance to return to the level of basketball that I worked so hard for in my career. I am very disappointed with this result, but it was a decision taken jointly with the medical staff.
My personal and ultimate goal for our team is to qualify for the 2024 Olympics. It will be an honor for me to represent the national team next year,” Antetokounmpo wrote on the social network.
Greece national team at the World Cup will play in Group C with the teams of the United States, Jordan and New Zealand.
