Qatari Sheikh Saud Ali al-Thani has become president of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), according to the FIBA website.
Al-Thani was elected unanimously at the FIBA Congress, which is being held in Manila. He succeeds the Malian Hamane Nyang.
“I am honored to take on this responsibility. From now on, I represent the interests of the 212 national federations on all continents. Basketball is a global sport. It is our most important strength. I can only make one promise: I will work diligently with the leadership of FIBA for the good of basketball and the organization,” al-Thani said.
Previously, al-Thani was Vice President of FIBA, President of FIBA Asia Zone, Head of the Qatar Basketball Federation and Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee.
