Runa Moscow general manager Sergey Yukhnevich told that the team’s goal in the upcoming VTB United League season will be to advance to the tournament playoffs.
In the coming season, the Moscow club will make its debut in the United League.
– Sergey, how are you approaching Runa’s first season in the United League?
“We are all in good spirits and extremely motivated. For us, this is a huge opportunity to gain a foothold in the elite of Russian basketball. So everyone is full of energy and wants to show what they can do. This applies to athletes as well as team and office staff.
– How do you assess the selection of the team in the off-season?
– It is impossible to give a precise assessment: the season will put everything in its place. We tried to recruit based on our tasks: we have to qualify for the playoffs. Therefore, we tried to select players of such a level who should help us solve them. But in addition to the playing opportunities for us athletes, their human qualities are also important. And when signing, it was even the most important factor, maybe some playing qualities.
As for the strength of the team, we can say that the Russian and foreign basketball players who came to us are of the highest level. Therefore, I think we will enforce competitive wrestling and not whip the boys into the league. Our main goal is to reach the playoffs. We will strive to achieve this. It is essential for us to gain a foothold at the top of Russian basketball and lay the club’s foundations for the future.
– Probably, a good example and guide for you is the MBA, which successfully debuted in the United League last season and entered the top 6?
— I wouldn’t say that the MBA is a benchmark for us. They have their story, we have ours. For us, the guideline is ourselves. We make mistakes, we grow and, based on this, we solve problems and achieve the necessary goals.
– Runa tried to get into the United League last year but failed. What went wrong then?
– Some rules issues have not been agreed to by the league. We have received time and feedback from the VTB United League management on what needs to be improved and fixed. This year we solved all these problems and realized our dearest dream, ”Yukhnevich said in an interview with correspondent.
UNICS Kazan is the current United League champion. The new season begins on September 30.
