Italy beat Puerto Rico and are in the quarterfinals

The Europeans had a good closing game and won 73-57.

At the close of the second stage of the FIBA​​​​​​World Cup 2023, Italy closed out an impressive match and earned their ticket to the quarterfinals. Those led by Gianmarco Pozzecco found in the offensive rebound a main weapon to punish in the second chances (22 to 3 in the category). Puerto Rico didn’t enjoy its effectiveness and after 2/13 shooting from the field in the final quarter, they bid farewell to the tournament after a 73-57 final, sparking European celebrations. With this result, Italy reached a record of four wins and one loss. This record puts him in the quarterfinals. Puerto Rico, for its part, bid farewell to the competition but already secured its ticket for the Olympic repechage to be held in July next year, ahead of the Paris 2024 Games.

Four players finished in double figures on the winning team. Stefano Tonut and Giampaolo Ricci were the scorers, with 15 goals each. The best came from the hands of Simone Fontecchio, double double figure, with 12 rebounds in 32 minutes on the court. Luigi Datome completes the list of outstanding offensive players, with 11 goals on his personal scoresheet. In Puerto Rico, only two players scored in double digits. Tremont Waters hit a double double with 13 points and 9 assists. Jordan Howard also finished with 11 points; in addition to 4 rebounds in just 25 minutes.

The continuation of the tournament

Now that the group stage is over, the teams will be divided according to their final position in the quarterfinals. The eight best teams will compete on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 September. The semifinals are on Friday, September 8, and the tie is on Sunday between the two best in the tournament.
