“This is serious recognition and trust” – Kirilenko on extending his mandate in the FIBA Central Council

Head of the Russian Basketball Federation (RFB) Andrei Kirilenko in a conversation with a correspondent, he commented on the decision of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to extend his term in the Central Council of the organization, calling this decision a serious confidence.

The decision was made on Saturday (September 9) during a FIBA Central Council meeting in Manila. It was separately noted that it would only come into force after agreement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

— Let me start by saying that I want to thank those who make the decisions at FIBA. This is good recognition and serious confidence. Because in the current conditions of isolation, trust is very expensive. During my long work in this or that status, I had serious contacts with representatives of FIBA and, indeed, a huge amount of time was spent and a large number of projects were carried out. It is very pleasant that all members maintain a normal working atmosphere and do not rush to extremes. I am sure that as soon as the sport frees itself a little from political pressures, we will come back as quickly as possible.

This does not mean that we have all suddenly returned to the international sports movement. It is very easy to make a decision when you do not yet have a voice, an alternative version, there is no one who can express your position. It is important to hear all voices, whatever they may be. I am opposed to isolating anyone. If we are in an international movement, every country has the right to express its opinion, even if it does not suit someone. In this regard, it is very good that we are heard and participate in the process,” Kirilenko told the correspondent.

Kirilenko headed the 3×3 basketball committee at the FIBA Central Council in September 2019.

Previously, FIBA suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from participating in competitions under the auspices of the organization. The ban on participation also applies at club level.
