Extension of the term of office of the head of the Russian Basketball Federation (RFB) Andrei Kirilenko in the Central Council of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is a good sign for Russian basketball, however, it should be borne in mind that the final word in this matter belongs to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Honored Coach of Russia Stanislav Eremin told .
Earlier on Saturday, FIBA extended Kirilenko’s term on the organization’s Central Council. The decision was made during a FIBA Central Council meeting in Manila. It should be noted separately that it will only come into force after agreement with the IOC.
“We must fight to defend every position.” Kirilenko leads our basketball federation, and it is great that his tenure in FIBA has been extended. Another thing is that the IOC must confirm it. And the positions of this organization are now very harsh towards us.
Once again, I repeat, in the current situation we must fight not to lose any position. So that they do not forget us and so that we can, if not in deeds, then at least in words, influence the development of the situation. In principle, it seems to me that it is a good sign for us that FIBA reacted in this way,” Eremin told the correspondent.
Kirilenko headed the 3×3 basketball committee at the FIBA Central Council in September 2019.
Previously, FIBA suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from participating in competitions under the auspices of the organization. The ban on participation also applies at club level.
