After seeing what free agency would be like, Kyrie Irving renewed his contract with the Dallas Mavericks for another three years and revealed that he is happy and motivated for next season alongside Luka Doncic
The veteran point guard Kyrie Irving decided to renew its contract with the Dallas Mavericks during the last ‘offseason’, after becoming a free agent and trying to explore the market, without success. In a conversation with the American press this past Thursday, the 28th, the player revealed that he was happy with the positive outcome of the negotiations and for being able to return to play alongside Luka Doncic.
Irving and the Mavs have reached a three-year deal that will pay the point guard $126 million. The franchise still needed to overcome competition from other teams, such as Phoenix Sunsto be able to count on ‘Uncle Drew’ in your squad for another season of NBA. Focused, the athlete stated that the renewal process was easy, as the team was his first option. “It wasn’t a very difficult process. I had Dallas as No. 1 on my list, but being a free agent I obviously looked at other places and salary cap opportunities. But I’m happy to have returned here (Dallas) and been welcomed with warm hugs.”said.
When asked how he feels, the point guard said he is excited, revealing that his family also played a role in his decision to stay on the team. “I took everything into consideration. I took the first few days of free agency just to be with my family and see how they felt about being in Dallas by my side. When I was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in the middle of last season, part of my family was very excited and were eager for me to have peace of mind on and off the court. I’ve dealt with a lot over the last few years on my shoulders and I’m not Superman and I’m not perfect. I just wanted to be myself and I think the best place to do that and continue growing as a man is here.”he said.
Kyrie Irving’s contract with the Dallas Mavericks includes a ‘player options’ for the last year, with an additional value of US$6 million, which you can earn as a bonus if you participate in 65 matches or achieve 50 victories. When asked, he said he liked the bonuses: “I wanted all of this in the contract. These bonuses, or incentives have to be based on my production and that production is based on wins and how many games I’m playing.”
Kyrie Irving arrived at the Mavericks after a trade with the Brooklyn Netswhich received Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smtih and an unprotected first-round pick from the ‘Draft’ 2029. However, the franchise did poorly at the end of the season and lost its place to the ‘playoffs’mainly due to the physical problems of the shipowner and Luka Doncic. “Luka and I are two lions on the court and everyone knows it. We always want to win and we need to maintain this mentality together to lead the team towards a great season. Everything has been a learning experience. Last year was very fast and there was a lot of pressure on both of us. We weren’t 100% and things didn’t go the way we wanted”concluded the shipowner.
